Today’s video follows a family living on a giant boat carrying tons of coconuts. They drift along a wide river, and the boat is not only where they work - it is also where they eat, sleep, and spend their everyday lives.
This floating village is one of the oldest in Vietnam, with a history that goes back hundreds of years. For many families here, a boat is more than a way to travel. It is their home, their workplace, and the center of family life.
Even with very limited space, people still find ways to cook on board. They prepare simple meals, including hot bowls of Vietnamese noodle soup, right on the boat. Washing clothes, caring for children, cooking, and resting all happen on the river.
This family has several children, but the children are not attending school yet because the family still does not have a home on land. When the parents go out fishing to earn a living, the children often stay behind on the boat and look after one another.
Life here is not easy. People depend on the river for transportation, food, work, and trade. On days when they earn enough money, they travel by boat to the market to buy food and other basic supplies.
People also make use of old and damaged boats. Instead of throwing them away, they turn them into small floating areas for raising dogs, chickens, ducks, and other animals.
This video gives a closer look at a very different way of life on the Mekong River - where boats become homes, the river becomes a livelihood, and entire families grow up surrounded by water.
