Shannon Ryan is on trial in Florida for the second-degree murder of 21-year-old Leela Cavett, a mother of one who was last seen alive at a racetrack in Hollywood in July 2020. Prosecutors say Ryan searched online for how to make chloroform, bought 20 heavy-duty trash bags at Walmart — 16 of which were never accounted for — and made multiple trips to a racetrack dumpster before fleeing to Texas. While all of this was happening, Leela's two-year-old son Camden was found wandering alone and barefoot in Miramar, Florida, and cell data placed Ryan's car and phone exactly where the child was dropped off. The state's case also rests on a jailhouse confession: inmate Kelvin Gibson testified that Ryan told him he should have killed the child like he killed her, and that Leela was "in a better place" — though the defense attacked Gibson's nine felony convictions and his years-long delay in coming forward. Ryan took the stand in his own defense, claiming he was covering up for a friend and that Leela simply jumped out of the car and walked away, while prosecutors argued no mother who breastfed her child would abandon him without shoes, pants, or a word. The jury must now decide whether the evidence proves Ryan intentionally caused Leela's death — or whether the defense's theory of reasonable doubt holds.
