Six Minutes: Grade 6 Math, Part 32: Dot Plots and Histograms and Box Plots: Statistics and Probability · 6.SP.4; then Box Plots Dot plots stack one dot per data value on a number line, while histograms group values into contiguous intervals and show counts as touching bars. Both displays show center, spread, and shape, and their counts must always add to the data size. Then: A box plot displays a data set with five numbers: the minimum, the lower quartile, the median, the upper quartile, and the maximum. This episode builds those five numbers from a sorted list and reads the box and whiskers as the middle half and the outer quarters of the data. A shop records daily customers: 12, 15, 12, 18, 15, 12, 20, 15, 18, 12. Make a dot plot: stack 4 dots over 12, 3 over 15, 2 over 18, 1 over 20. Check: 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 10 values. Way 2: list the data and count each value directly; you get 12 four times, 15 three times, 18 twice, 20 once, which matches the stacks. 2. Test scores grouped in intervals 60-69 (3 students), 70-79 (7), 80-89 (5), 90-99 (5). Draw the histogram with touching bars of heights 3, 7, 5, 5. Check: 3 + 7 + 5 + 5 = 20 students. Way 2: add the interval counts in a different order, 5 + 5 + 7 + 3 = 20, using a frequency table; the total is the same. 3. Eight students read these numbers of pages in one week: 4, 6, 7, 7, 9, 11, 12, 16. Find the five numbers of the box plot. Answer: min = 4, Q1 = 6.5, median = 8, Q3 = 11.5, max = 16. 4. A box plot has min = 5, Q1 = 8, median = 10, Q3 = 15, max = 30. Which part of the data is more spread out, the lower half or the upper half? Answer: the upper half, because the distance from the median to the maximum is 20, while the distance from the minimum to the median is 5.
