Six Minutes: Grade 6 Math, Part 33: Median and Mean and Interquartile Range and MAD: Two ways to name the middle of a data set; then Interquartile Range and MAD
The mean balances every value by dividing the sum by the count, while the median is the middle value of the ordered data. One large value can pull the mean far away while the median barely moves. Then: This episode defines the interquartile range as Q3 minus Q1 and the mean absolute deviation as the average distance from the mean. It works both measures on original data sets and checks each answer a second way.

Practice problems
1. Find the median and the mean of 12, 4, 9, 15, 10. (Median 10; mean 50 ÷ 5 = 10.)
2. Find the median and the mean of 3, 5, 7, 45. (Median (5 + 7) ÷ 2 = 6; mean 60 ÷ 4 = 15.)
3. Data: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14. Find the IQR. (Median 8; Q1 = 4, Q3 = 12; IQR = 8.)
4. Data: 5, 7, 9. Find the MAD. (Mean 7; distances 2, 0, 2; MAD = 4/3, about 1.33.)
