How do laundromats make money? Less than $1 of every $3 wash stays with the owner, because the economics of laundromats run on a ten-year clock: the biggest maker of commercial washers in North America plans around roughly ten years of life per machine, while store owners expect closer to eight and a half. Of a $3 wash, utilities take about 63 cents, rent about 72 cents and labor about 66 cents, leaving roughly 99 cents. This is how $3 laundromats actually make money: the laundromat business model is a tenant on a replacement clock, where the coin laundry owner does the running and the machines, the lease and the utilities get paid by the mile. A store typically sells for a median of 3.5 times its yearly profit. And when the machine maker went public in October 2025, about $413 million went to two investment firms while the company itself received about $537 million. That is the real economics of laundromats.
