Then the coastline shifts as we reach Garry Beach, with cliffs, long views and the start of the famous Lewis sea stacks. We wander right among the sea stacks, huge natural rock pillars shaped by the Atlantic swell over thousands of years. Next, we stop at Garry Bridge — better known as the Bridge to Nowhere. Built as part of Lord Leverhulme’s ambitious plan to modernise Lewis, the bridge is a reinforced concrete feat: around 50 feet high, spanning 100 feet, supported by nine arches. A bold idea… but one that never reached completion. We explore why his plans eventually failed. Moving inland, the scenery suddenly changes into a more lunar, rocky landscape. We drive through Barvas, sharing a little background, before settling at our park-up for the night — and meeting an unexpected visitor. Then it’s tea time and the view to end Day One of our Outer Hebrides journey.
