Bamboo Forest, Romantic Scenic Railway and Saga Torokko Station, Arashiyama, Kyoto, Japan – Part 3

This is the third and final part of my trip to Arashiyama, and it turned out to be a relaxed but memorable end to the day. I began at the northern end of Tenryu-ji Temple, leaving behind the calm temple grounds and stepping gradually into one of Arashiyama’s most atmospheric walking areas. From there, the path led me through part of the bamboo forest, where the tall green stalks rose on either side and created that quiet, almost enclosed feeling that makes this part of Kyoto so special. Even with other visitors around, there was still something peaceful about moving slowly through the grove and letting the scenery unfold at walking pace. Continuing, I made my way towards the Sagano Romantic Train, a scenic railway known for its nostalgic charm and views through the Hozugawa River valley. The route added a unique perspective to Arashiyama: less about temples and busy streets, and more about forested hills, railway platforms, and the anticipation of another journey. By the time I returned to Saga Torokko Station, I had not only completed the walk I had planned but also discovered another train trip that could be taken from the same station. It was one of those small travel discoveries that makes a day feel more rewarding, especially when it gives you an idea for a future visit. A useful tip for planning this part of Arashiyama is that tickets for attractions such as Tenryu-ji Temple and the Sagano Romantic Train do not always need to be purchased through third-party websites or tour companies. In many cases, you can buy tickets directly online through the official attraction website, or at the entrance, station, or ticket office on the day, depending on availability. It is still worth checking ahead during busy travel seasons, but buying direct can be simpler and helps avoid paying more than necessary.
