John Maher appearing on "Stars & Cars", 1999

Buzzcocks drummer John Maher set himself up as an aircooled Volkswagen repairs specialist after getting out of the music business. In the late '80s he started to gain a reputation as one of the top VW tuners in the UK, which he often proved in VW drag racing. This short feature, from a 1999 Channel 5 series, takes a brief look at John's days in the Buzzcocks as well as his VW activities. It was filmed at his old workshop in Chorlton, Manchester. A few years later he relocated his life and business to the Isle of Harris, off the north-west coast of Scotland.
