Imagine trying to sleep on uneven ground while insects buzz beyond the firelight. Long before mattresses, doors, or dedicated bedrooms, humans were already building places to rest.
This video follows the archaeological evidence for ancient bedding at Border Cave and Sibudu in South Africa, then carefully compares those traces with measured sleep patterns in present-day Hadza, San, and Tsimané communities. The goal is not to treat living communities as fossils of the Stone Age, but to ask what the evidence can—and cannot—tell us about shared nights, plant bedding, fire, housekeeping, and the possibility that different sleep rhythms made group sleep less synchronized.

• Yetish et al. (2015): https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26480... — sleep in Hadza, San, and Tsimané participants began on average about 3.3 hours after sunset, with seasonal variation and little extended nocturnal waking.
• Samson et al. (2017): https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles... — Hadza actigraphy found only 18 minutes of simultaneous scored sleep across 20 days, supporting sentinel-like opportunity without proving assigned night guards.
• Wadley et al. (2020): https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32792... — grass bedding at Border Cave dates to at least about 200,000 years ago and was placed on ash layers in areas interpreted for sleeping and working.
• Wadley et al. (2011): https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22158... — Sibudu preserves plant bedding around 77,000 years ago, including aromatic leaves with insecticidal and larvicidal chemicals, plus later burning for site maintenance.
