After weeks of grueling heat at the 45-acre abandoned cabin build, I work to seal and encapsulate the crawl space before the first freeze. Temperatures plunged from 95 degrees to a frost advisory in a single week in our area, making crawl space winterization and insulation an urgent race against time. Because our water lines run directly through this area, conditioning the underside of the cabin to stay above freezing—and match the main living space—is paramount to prevent frozen pipes. In this video, I also install 2-inch poly-iso rigid foam board, Rockwool batts, and a commercial-grade Vevor dehumidifier to keep the entire foundation warm, dry, and protected from moisture and mold. What We Tackle in This Video: • Lighting the Space: Wiring trifold LED shop lights & outlets • Crawlspace/ Foundation Insulation: Cutting & installing 2-inch poly-iso foam panels • Thermal Barrier: Placing Rockwool batts between stud skirting • Exterior Skirting: Hanging plywood skirt boards • Structural Reinforcement: Driving 6-inch structural truss screws to prevent uplift • Moisture Control: Unboxing & hanging the Vevor dehumidifier Timestamps: 00:00 – Prepping the Crawl Space & Freeze Deadline 00:23 – Wiring Shop Lights & Outlets 03:12 – End of day Break & Pup Visit 04:48 – Cutting & Installing Rockwool 07:44 – Fitting 2-Inch Poly-iso Foam Boards 11:20 – Exterior Skirt Wall Installation 16:34 – Day Two: Battling the Cramped Space 17:32 – Reinforcing with Truss Screws 19:17 – Hanging the Vevor Dehumidifier 20:07 – Wrap-Up & Next Steps Subscribe to follow along with the 45-acre cabin build, and let me know your favorite off-grid winterization tips in the comments! Follow along as we continue to build out our short-term vacation rental / Airbnb micro resort. Right now we're in the early stages of finishing out the abandoned cabin that was on the property when we purchased it, while trying to juggle the logistics of getting the sites and utilities ready for the future — all while working full-time jobs. We'll use this cabin as our "home base" while we build out at least 3 more cabins on the property. Give us a like and subscribe to follow along as we build this cabin and 3 others, plus a trail system, on our 45-acre mountain property. The property has views of Taum Sauk Mountain and features similar rare boulder formations to Elephant Rocks State Park, both just a short drive away. We're calling the property Mina Sauk Cabins, named after nearby Mina Sauk Falls, Missouri's tallest waterfall at 132 feet — itself named for a Native American legend about a chief's daughter and a forbidden love that, as the story goes, ends with the waterfall being born from the tragedy. Other local destinations nearby include the state's most popular natural swimming hole, Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park, and the beautiful Mark Twain National Forest.
