Johann Sebastian Bach – Concerto in A minor, BWV 1065
I. Allegro
The first movement of Bach’s Concerto in A minor, BWV 1065, is a powerful reimagining of Vivaldi’s Concerto for Four Violins in B minor, Op. 3 No. 10. Likely composed during Bach’s Leipzig period, the work transforms the Italian concerto into a monumental piece for four harpsichords and orchestra.
Marked Allegro, the movement is driven by relentless rhythmic energy and tightly interwoven dialogue between the solo instruments. Rather than featuring a single dominant voice, Bach creates a constantly shifting texture in which the four keyboards exchange rapid figures, echo motifs, and build dense layers of counterpoint.
The orchestral ritornello provides strong structural pillars throughout the movement, while the solo episodes expand the musical material with increasing complexity and momentum. Bach preserves the vitality and brilliance of Vivaldi’s original while enriching the harmonic depth and contrapuntal detail in unmistakably Bachian fashion.
The result is a movement of extraordinary drive and clarity—at once virtuosic, architectural, and exhilarating in its perpetual motion.
