Have you ever stopped to ask what James meant when he called himself a “servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ” in James 1:1?
The Greek word James used is doulos—a word that carries the idea of a bond-servant or slave. Why did James choose this particular word when the New Testament contains several different Greek words that can be translated “servant”?
In this James 1:1 Bible study, we take a closer look at the Greek words for “servant” and discover why James' choice of doulos is so significant.
We’ll examine words such as pais, diakonos, oiketes, hyperetes, therapon, and words referring to hired servants—and then see why James deliberately describes himself as a doulos of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ.
More importantly, James' choice of this word tells us something about the man before he ever tells us about his message.
James could have emphasized his position, authority, or relationship to Jesus. Instead, he identified himself as a servant—a person whose will was completely surrendered to God.
And that gives us an important lesson about humility, submission, Christian leadership, and our relationship with God and Jesus Christ.
