🌪️ A tropical storm in the desert? Tropical Storm Rachel may have lost its tropical characteristics, but its moisture is helping fuel a dangerous flash-flood threat across FOUR unlikely states: California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah. How does a tropical storm from the Pacific Ocean end up threatening some of America’s driest places? And could the desert Southwest experience flooding similar to what Hurricane Hilary brought to Death Valley in 2023? Meteorologist Ric Kearbey explains Rachel’s unusual path, the atmospheric conditions driving tropical moisture inland, and why desert flash flooding can be so dangerous. ❤️ HELP US GROW WEATHER NERDY! Although Rachel has become post-tropical, its remaining moisture can still contribute to heavy rainfall across the southwestern United States. An approaching upper-level trough is helping transport tropical moisture inland, creating conditions favorable for significant rainfall. The biggest concern isn’t Rachel’s winds. It’s the potential for flash flooding across normally dry landscapes, especially where mountains, narrow canyons and dry washes can concentrate runoff. 🌧️ FOUR STATES FACING A FLOOD THREAT 📍 CALIFORNIA: Southern California’s mountains and deserts face the potential for heavy rainfall and flash flooding. 📍 NEVADA: Southern Nevada, including the Las Vegas region, could experience dangerous runoff and flooding in normally dry washes. 📍 ARIZONA: Northwestern Arizona faces the threat of heavy rainfall and localized flash flooding. 📍 UTAH: Southwestern Utah’s desert terrain and narrow canyons could experience dangerous flooding, including areas popular with hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. 🏜️ REMEMBER HURRICANE HILARY? In August 2023, Hurricane Hilary brought extraordinary rainfall to the desert Southwest. Death Valley recorded 2.20 inches of rain in a single day, exceeding its typical annual rainfall. That historic event demonstrated how tropical moisture can create dangerous flooding even after a hurricane weakens. Rachel is a different storm, but the atmospheric setup raises some familiar concerns. 🌎 ABOUT WEATHER NERDY I’m Ric Kearbey, a meteorologist with 30 years of television weather experience.
