Harrisburg was a major hub on the Pennsylvania Railroad's rout between the east coast and Chicago and was home to a number of large freight yards. It was also a junction between the Pennsy and the Cumberland Valley Railroad,, which passed through Maryland and into the Shenandoah Valley. The Reading also operated in Harrisburg and their bridge over the Susquehanna is still used by Norfolk and Southern.
