Podbukovc lies in the Poljanska valley, and the meadow we call Laz runs at an angle no loader can hold. What was cut last week had to come down by hand, first through the afternoon heat, then in the dark with the tractor's headlights thrown against the barn wall. The rain arrived the next afternoon, a few hours after the last load went into the loft. By Thursday morning the fog had come over the hill, and the summer was behind us.
