How was the legendary Howrah Bridge built over the Hooghly River during one of the most difficult periods in history?
This documentary takes you back to 1930s and 1940s Kolkata to uncover the incredible story behind Howrah Bridge — from its deep foundations and massive caissons to the enormous steel structure that rose above the Hooghly River.
The project faced extraordinary engineering and wartime challenges. Large ships needed to continue using the tidal river, while engineers had to create a massive bridge without ordinary supporting pillars in the middle of the navigation channel.
The foundation work went deep underground, with workers operating inside caissons under difficult conditions. Then came another major challenge: the bridge required thousands of tonnes of steel during World War II, when international supply chains were severely disrupted.
Tata Steel supplied 23,500 tonnes of high-tensile steel for the project, while the completed bridge used about 26,500 tonnes of steel in total. The structure was assembled using riveting rather than conventional nuts and bolts.
Finally, on 3 February 1943, the New Howrah Bridge was opened to public traffic. It later became officially known as Rabindra Setu in 1965, although millions still know it simply as Howrah Bridge.
In this documentary, you'll discover:
• How the old floating bridge created a transportation problem
• Why the Hooghly River made construction so difficult
• How engineers built the deep foundations
• How workers operated inside compressed-air caissons
• How India produced the high-tensile steel needed during WWII
• How the giant steel sections were assembled
• How hydraulic jacks were used to align the suspended sections
• Why the bridge became an engineering landmark
• How Howrah Bridge became an iconic part of Kolkata
This is not just the story of a bridge.
It is the story of engineering, steel, workers, planning and determination during one of the most challenging periods of the 20th century.
