From space down to the cliffs of Quebec - and straight into 13 September 1759, when two armies met on the Plains of Abraham and decided the future of a continent. Then we rewind to 1535: an Iroquoian village called Stadacona, Jacques Cartier's ships, Champlain's wooden Habitation, the walls, the sieges of 1690, 1759 and 1775, the timber port, the Château Frontenac and Old Québec today.
Every building rises in the year it appeared, on the real shoreline of the St Lawrence. Original 3D animation and sound by Humanity Archives.

Which city should we bring to life next? Tell us in the comments!
Note: the shoreline, cliffs and landmark positions are based on real map and elevation data (OpenStreetMap contributors, Mapzen/AWS Terrain Tiles); land later made along the river is removed from the early shoreline. Buildings and troop movements are a stylised reconstruction. Population before the first census of New France (1666) is estimated (Stadacona very roughly); since 2002 figures are for the merged city.
