There's a new movie called GDN starring R. Madhavan, but the real G.D. Naidu was even more unbelievable than the film shows.
He dropped out of school, drove a bus for a living, and taught himself engineering. In 1947 he imported an Oldsmobile for research, refused to pay an import duty he thought was unfair, and smashed the car with a hammer rather than pay it, then bought the wreck back at auction.
In this video:
His start: born in Kalangal, school dropout, first motorcycle, first passenger bus
The Oldsmobile story behind one of the movie's most talked-about scenes
His real inventions: India's first electric motor (1937), the Rasant razor, a kerosene-run fan, a five-valve radio, and a tamper-proof voting machine
What happened to his fortune: a net worth breakdown and how he split his later contributions across Polytechnic College, Agriculture, and Siddha Medicine
If GDN sent you looking for the real story, this covers it.
