Five Sufi poets, five languages, one woman's voice singing under the breath.
Sukūn (سكون) is the eleventh album in Museca's Sotto Voce series — contemplative, quietly sung meditations built on the discipline that nothing may rise above an intimate murmur. The word means stillness, and it is also the name of the small mark in the Arabic script that says: no sound here.
The album follows the Sufi path through five of its stations, each given to the poet who spoke of it best, in the language he or she actually used: Rumi in Persian, for the reed cut from the reed-bed; Rābiʿa of Basra in Arabic, for love that wants nothing; Yunus Emre in Turkish, for knowing yourself; Bulleh Shah in Punjabi, for the moment the self gives way; and Rahman Baba in Pashto, for the return — the one who has dissolved comes back as soil, and sows flowers. Between the songs, four instrumental passages hand the melody from setar to oud, oud to bağlama, bağlama to sarangi, and sarangi — at last — to the ney, the reed flute the first song was about and seven tracks withheld. A single low pulse runs unbroken from the first track to the last, and fades to silence only at the very end.
Best heard whole, from the first silence to the last.
