In the UK, it’s bills, bills, bills. In Nigeria, it feels like there’s always another emergency! After living in the UK for many years and relocating back to Nigeria, I’ve come to appreciate that the financial pressures of living in these two countries can be very different. In the UK, you have your mortgage or rent, council tax, electricity, gas, insurance and all the other regular bills that seem to consume your salary before you can even enjoy it. But in Nigeria, budgeting can be a different kind of challenge. You have your regular expenses, rising prices and those unexpected costs that seem to appear just when you think you’ve got everything under control. Something needs repairing. An expense you didn’t anticipate suddenly becomes urgent. You return to the market and discover that the price of something has increased again. Before you know it, your carefully planned budget is no longer enough. In this video, I share my perspective on the financial realities of living in Nigeria after spending many years in the UK. We discuss the cost of living, inflation, unexpected expenses, the difficulty of budgeting and why having a contingency fund is so important, particularly for those considering relocating to Nigeria. I’m not suggesting that life in the UK is easy or that Nigeria is the only country experiencing rising prices. Rather, I want to explore how financial pressures can differ between the two countries and why we need to look beyond attractive relocation stories when making decisions about where to live. If you’re living in Nigeria, planning to relocate from the UK or elsewhere, or simply interested in the realities of life in both countries, this conversation is for you. IN THIS VIDEO: Why budgeting in Nigeria can be so challenging The difference between regular bills and unexpected expenses How rising prices affect household budgets The financial realities of relocating to Nigeria Why you need a contingency fund How to prepare for the unexpected when planning your move LET’S TALK IN THE COMMENTS! Do you find it harder to manage regular monthly bills abroad, or the unexpected expenses and changing prices in Nigeria? If you’ve lived in both countries, I’d love to hear about your experience.
