What does it really mean when your dog licks you? Most of us call every lick a doggy kiss, but a lick at the door, a lick when you're crying and a lick on one spot of your arm are very different messages. And one kind of lick has nothing to do with you at all.
In this video:
✓ 9 kinds of dog lick, where each one comes from and what it's telling you ✓ Why licking is the very first conversation a puppy ever has ✓ The greeting lick at the door, and the wild-dog ritual behind it ✓ Why dogs lick your hands, legs and especially your feet ✓ What a 2012 Goldsmiths study found when owners and strangers pretended to cry ✓ The old belief that dog saliva heals wounds, and why you should say no anyway ✓ The anxious lick, and why a child may mistake a stressed dog for an affectionate one ✓ When a dog's licking of its own paws or body becomes a sign of allergy, infection or pain ✓ The strange lick at floors, walls and the air that's really about your dog's stomach
Most licking is love, comfort or curiosity, passed down from a mother cleaning her newborn puppy. But a few kinds of lick are worth a closer look.
Some safety notes from the video. Don't let your dog lick an open cut or broken skin. A bacterium that lives harmlessly in many dogs' mouths can, in rare cases, cause serious infection, especially in people who are elderly, pregnant, on chemotherapy or have a weak immune system. If you use a medicated cream or patch, especially a hormone cream or pain patch, keep your dog away from that skin, because dogs have been poisoned by licking these off their owners. And if your dog suddenly licks themselves, the floor or the air far more than usual, talk to your vet.
