I Saved $125 on Garden Soil… Here’s How!

The raised bed garden is coming together, and in this video we’re finding a way to save some money while getting the beds ready for planting! First, we had to make some room. We moved our overwintered chestnut trees from this area so we could make room for Kris’s raised bed garden. Those trees had spent the winter here, and now it was time to get them moved and get started on the next part of the garden project. When it came time to fill the raised beds, we decided to make use of something we already had — rotted wood. Instead of filling the entire beds with expensive topsoil, we used the rotted wood as a base layer. This allowed us to reduce the amount of soil we needed while also putting that old wood to good use. But we still needed plenty of soil to finish filling the beds. So why buy dirt when we already had a pile of topsoil? I used the Dresser 100G track loader to scrape the topsoil from the pile and then brought it over to our homemade soil sifter. From there, I shoveled the dirt across the screen and into a wheelbarrow, separating out the rocks, roots, sticks and other debris. It was definitely some work — but it was FREE dirt, and a little work can go a long way when you're trying to save money on a garden project. After figuring in the cost of the dirt, fuel and everything else involved, I estimate that sifting and using our own soil saved us around $125. This raised bed garden has definitely been a project of making use of what we already have, finding ways to save money, and doing the work ourselves.
