🐻🦁🦓🫎🐑 Building Shelters for Our Animal Friends! 📖 📚🌧️📦
Inspired by a book- The Very Cranky Bear by Nick Bland, we invited our little learners to help 🐻 Bear, 🦁 Lion, 🦓 Zebra, 🫎 Moose and 🐑 Sheep find a warm and safe place to play and rest on a cold, rainy day. Although it was not actually cold or rainy outside, we used our imagination and pretended it was a chilly, rainy day to bring the story to life through book-inspired play.🤝With cardboard pieces, cardboard tubes, wooden blocks and animal figures, children were encouraged to build, arrange, balance and experiment as they created different shelters for their animal friends. There was no right or wrong way to build—each child's ideas and creations were welcomed and appreciated! Infants participated mainly through exploring and manipulating the larger cardboard pieces, animal figures and sturdy tubes. Our younger children also enjoyed putting blocks into the jar, building towers, turning pages in the books and observing the older children working hard and continuously on their creations. Toddlers took the lead in building and solving the shelter challenges, using tubes as pillars and flat cardboard pieces as roofs. They worked hard to create a bigger house where all the animals could stay together and even built a long walking trail for the animals to walk through. 🏠🐾
As they explored, I encouraged their thinking with open-ended questions such as: “It’s cold and rainy outside! How can we build a warm shelter for our animal friends?” “Will all the animals fit?” “Can we make more space?” “What happens if we make the shelter bigger?” These questions encouraged children to think, experiment and find their own solutions while extending the story through imaginative play. 💭🤝👌
📖 📚 Benefits of This Book-Inspired Open-Ended Play: 🐻🦁🦓🫎🐑📦
Through this child-led construction play, children explored problem-solving, spatial awareness, cause and effect, fine-motor coordination, creativity, language, cooperation and empathy. They also practiced planning, balancing and testing their ideas while developing an understanding of size, space, stability and movement. Most importantly, the children had the opportunity to use their imagination, make independent choices and think about what their animal friends might need—all through meaningful, open-ended and hands-on play. 👏👏👏
