WATCH: “King Saha lied in the Akamwanyi song when he said their coffee was stolen. I want to assure him today that the coffee is back,” Gen (Rtd) Salim Saleh says, urging Ugandans to join the Uganda Coffee Group at its launch. Mayor Moses Katambu is not happy with judge’s descision for dismissed his apication. He descides to apply in high court “When I Was Minister of Internal Affairs, Digital Number Plates Were Useless” – Gen Kahinda Otafiire Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire has questioned the value of Uganda’s Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS) digital number plates project, arguing that the country should have considered local manufacturer Wavamunno instead of importing the plates. Otafiire made the remarks while appearing before Parliament’s Committee on Physical Infrastructure, which is scrutinising the controversial digital number plates project. “When I was still Minister of Internal Affairs, this digital number plates thing was useless. There was no value added,” Otafiire said. He also questioned the decision to import the plates, arguing that Uganda had the capacity to manufacture them locally. “Why did we abandon Wavamunno to go and import number plates when they could be made here?” he asked. His remarks come amid growing scrutiny of the ITMS project, which has faced criticism over its cost, implementation delays and procurement arrangements involving Russian firm JSC Global Security. The project has also attracted attention over questions surrounding the award of the contract in 2021, when former Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka approved the agreement with the Russian company, while his law firm, K&K Advocates, later represented the firm. The circumstances surrounding the contract have raised questions about a potential conflict of interest, an issue that has featured in the wider debate over the project's procurement process. Parliament's ongoing scrutiny is expected to examine the project's implementation, the value it has delivered to Uganda and whether the decision to import the digital number plates was justified. Police Warn Motorists: Carrying Even One Bag of Charcoal Into Kampala Could Land You in Trouble The Uganda Police Force has warned motorists against transporting charcoal into Kampala, cautioning that carrying even a single bag could attract enforcement action under Executive Order No. 3 of 2023. The order bans charcoal burning and trade in northern Uganda, West Nile, Karamoja and Teso as part of efforts to curb deforestation and promote environmental conservation. Police have intensified operations targeting the illegal charcoal trade, with recent crackdowns in Amuru and Pakwach districts resulting in the seizure of 275 bags of charcoal from vehicles and roadside dealers. The operations also led to the arrest of several drivers and conductors suspected of involvement in the illegal transportation of the charcoal. Authorities are now tightening enforcement against motorists moving charcoal from the affected regions, warning that even small quantities could draw the attention of law enforcement officers.
