By the time he pulled onto the shoulder at the exit she named, the seat where she had been sitting was dry. Not damp. Dry. A button was on the floor mat, and the exit she had asked for had been closed since 1985. Phyllis drove I-80 across Wyoming in 2006 when a voice on CB channel 19 warned her of a jackknife on the North Platte bridge seconds before a flatbed folded across both lanes right where her truck would have been. The voice signed off the old way, a sign-off nobody had used since the seventies, and at the truck stop at dawn she found a newspaper page under glass naming the driver lost on that same bridge in 1979. Curtis pulled a loaded Peterbilt into a closed weigh station in eastern Kentucky in October 2018 and watched a dark, powerless readout board light up with the exact weight of only the freight in his trailer. Then it rolled to a second number he had never hauled. Two weeks later, a broker called him with a rush load at that exact weight. He turned it down. The driver who took it never arrived.
