Every returnee has a story, and behind every decision to return lies a long journey of reflection, waiting, and hope.
As part of its research study on Syrian refugees’ perceptions of voluntary return, SYCAC met with a number of Syrians who chose to return from Türkiye to Syria, listening to their experiences, motivations, and what they carried with them after years of displacement.
For them, return was not simply a crossing of borders. It was a decision shaped by family, safety, employment, the future, and the desire to rebuild their lives in their homeland.
Each returnee carried a different story: an experience they gained, a skill they developed, and a journey that shaped their perspective on the future. At the same time, they carried questions and challenges about the possibility of building a stable and sustainable life after returning.
For this reason, SYCAC did not limit its work to tracking return figures. Instead, it sought to understand the person behind the decision and the reasons and circumstances that shaped it.
In this context, SYCAC conducted a comprehensive field study in the provinces of Gaziantep, Kilis, and Şanlıurfa, surveying hundreds of Syrian refugees about voluntary return, the factors that encourage or discourage them from returning, and the conditions they consider necessary to build a safe and stable life in Syria.
Because understanding return begins by listening to those making the decision themselves and evidence is the foundation for building more sustainable and realistic responses.
