September 5, 2026. This is the last night of Gujo Odori, one of Japan's three great folk dances and part of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage "Furyu-odori." The evening begins with the junior club's music, followed by the preservation society. Dancers form a long circle through the streets for the final time this summer. When the dancing ends, the yakata (dance stage) is sent off — "Kawasaki" gives way to "Harukoma" as the lanterns light the way. Three claps in unison, and the summer is over. Until next year.
