The current Narayanhiti Palace was built between 1963 and 1969 under King Mahendra, replacing the old Rana palace that was demolished in 1886. Designed by American architect Benjamin Polk, it was built in a modern style with Nepali Architectural influences, designed to visually distinguish the Shah dynasty from the Rana dynasty.
