*This Sausage Casserole Feeds 4 for Under £5*
Eight sausages, a couple of tins, two onions and a few simple cupboard ingredients — that’s all you need to make a proper family dinner for less than a fiver.
In this video, I’m showing you how I make an old-fashioned sausage casserole the way my mum and nan did it: rich, thick, full of flavour and without a packet mix in sight.
The biggest mistake?
Putting pale sausages straight into the pot.
Brown them properly first and you get that deep, sticky flavour that turns a cheap packet of sausages into something that tastes like a proper Sunday dinner.
I’ll also show you why:
🌭 Browning the sausages first makes such a difference
🧅 Cooking the onions slowly in the sausage fat builds flavour
🍅 Frying the tomato purée and paprika removes that raw taste
🥄 Scraping the bottom of the pan gives you all those lovely browned bits
🔥 A gentle simmer keeps the sausages tender
🥘 Taking the lid off at the end makes the sauce thick and glossy
⏳ Letting the casserole rest for 10 minutes makes it even better
And there’s one cheap ingredient my nan always added right at the end…
A tin of baked beans.
Don’t laugh until you’ve tried it, love.
The beans help thicken the sauce, soften the sharpness of the tomatoes and make the whole pot stretch further. Eight sausages suddenly become enough to feed four people properly — with often a little left for tomorrow.
And the best bit?
The whole meal comes to around **£4.25 for four people**, including mash and peas. That’s roughly £1 per person for a warm, filling family dinner.
Serve it over a big pile of mash with a little well in the middle for the gravy…
Or with a thick slice of bread and butter if you’re on my nan’s side.
💬 Tell me in the comments: *are you a mash house or a bread house?*
And would you put baked beans in your sausage casserole?
