Santaneshwor Mahadev Temple sits on a hilltop in Jharuwarasi, Godawari — Lalitpur District — and holds one of the most compelling legends in the Kathmandu Valley: this is believed to be the spot where the upper lip of Sati Devi fell as Lord Shiva carried her lifeless body across the sky. Today it's known across Nepal as the temple that blesses childless couples with children, and it's even mentioned in the Shree Swasthani Brata Katha.
In this episode of Nepal Mysteries, we climb the 366 stone steps to the ancient black-stone shivling at the summit, unpack the Sati Devi legend and its connection to Lord Shiva, and show you exactly how to reach the temple, when to visit (the temple sees its biggest crowds during Magh and Shrawan), and what to expect once you're there — including the 360-degree view over the Kathmandu Valley.
📍 Location: Jharuwarasi, Godawari Municipality, Lalitpur, Nepal
🛕 Deity: Lord Shiva (Santaneshwor Mahadev)
