Episode 1376
Lucille (Jennifer Moss) enjoys breakfast with Danny (Ian Liston) but she refuses his offer of a lift into work because she does not want anyone to discover that they are living together. Ken (Bill Roache) goes to Glasgow to fetch Peter (Linus Roache) and Susan (Wendy Jane Walker). Ernie (Stephen Hancock) worries when Ken and Annie (Doris Speed) are unavailable for rehearsals. Ken meets Edith Tatlock (Clare Kelly) in Glasgow, who admits she cannot see Janet (Judith Barker) as a stepmother to the twins. She asks whether Ken left the twins with her because of school difficulties or for another reason. Rita (Barbara Knox) tells Emily (Eileen Derbyshire) that she will attend the rehearsal. Ernie appoints Emily as prompter. Ernie starts rehearsals with only three cast members present. He tries to get Jerry (Graham Haberfield) to take his role seriously and tells Rita to play Miss Prism straight rather than exaggerating the comedy. Rita argues that the play needs to be sent up to make it funny. When Ernie insists that she follow his direction, she walks out, calling the production a farce. Janet phones Ken and suggests that he leave the twins with Edith for a little longer rather than take them away so suddenly, but Ken insists on bringing them home. Ernie struggles to replace Rita, and Emily initially refuses to stand in, pointing out that she has already been made prompter, but eventually agrees when Ernie warns that the production may have to be cancelled. Lucille and Danny discuss their life together and plans to improve the flat. Lucille admits that she felt lonely in her old bedsitter, and they enjoy having each other for company, but she worries that people will discover their relationship because everyone believes Danny is living with Lorraine Binks (Linda Cunningham). Lucille tells Billy (Kenneth Farrington) the truth. He is surprised but accepts that Danny’s private life is his own business. He warns Lucille to be careful not to get hurt, and she asks him to keep the relationship secret until she is ready to tell Annie. Ken tells Edith that he wants to bring Peter and Susan back to Weatherfield permanently, not just for a holiday. Edith is upset but accepts that they are his children. Ken explains that Janet was not ready to become their stepmother but is now prepared to try. Edith reminds him that Peter and Susan’s feelings matter most and suggests he asks them whether they want to live in Weatherfield.
