🔗 Stay in Your Own Home, on Your Own Terms, with My Book, Still My Call: https://joanwhitaker.com It was a Sunday. Both of my children came over for dinner, which should have been my first clue. Halfway through the pot roast they traded a look across the table, the kind of look they used to trade as teenagers when they wanted the car. Then my oldest set down his fork, slid a folder of brochures toward my plate, and said it. "Mom, it's time." In this video I tell you what my children said that night, why they said it, and exactly what I told them back. I spent 35 years as a CPA, and I've learned that the person who walks into a meeting with a folder usually thinks the decision is already made. This one wasn't. I'll be honest with you up front, the way I always am. My children love me, and they weren't wrong to worry. There are times when moving is the right call, and some people are happier for it. I'm not telling you to dig in your heels no matter what. I'm telling you that it's your life, and the decision about where you live it should be yours. I tell you how to hear your family's worry without handing over the decision along with it. I share the questions I asked them back, and what their answers told me about what was really behind the folder. I tell you what I agreed to change in my house that very week, and what I didn't agree to. And I walk you through how to put your wishes in writing now, while you're the one holding the pen, so nobody has to guess later. I'm not a lawyer, so for a power of attorney or an advance directive, it's worth sitting down with an elder law attorney. Nobody makes any money when you stay home and stay in charge. That's why you don't hear this very often. Tell me in the comments: has one of your children said "it's time" to you yet, or have you been the one to say it to a parent? And tell me how it went. I read every single one. Subscribe so you don't miss it. Independence isn't where you live. It's who gets to decide. #AgingInPlace #AgingParents #AdultChildren #StayingIndependent #SeniorLiving #AssistedLiving #RetirementHome #ElderCare #Over60 #Over70 #Retirement #IndependentLiving #FamilyConversations #SeniorAdvice #LivingAlone
