🔗 Stay in Your Own Home, on Your Own Terms, with My Book, Still My Call: https://joanwhitaker.com Every tour starts the same way. A bright lobby, a bowl of fresh fruit, a marketing director with a warm handshake who already knows your name. They walk you past the library, the salon and a dining room with cloth napkins, and they always seem to time it so the exercise class is just letting out. Then they hand you a glossy folder with a number on the front, and that number is never what you end up paying. In this video I take you through the 5 retirement homes I toured, and what each one showed me and what it left out. I spent 35 years as a CPA reading the fine print other people skipped, so I read the folders, I asked for the contracts, and I went back to two of them when nobody was expecting me. I'll be honest with you up front, the way I always am. Some of these places are lovely, and some people are truly happier in one. I'm not telling you never to move. I'm telling you that the tour is a sales presentation, and you deserve to know what's behind it before you sign anything. I show you why the model apartment is not the apartment you'll get, and the one question that tells you what the real units look like. I explain why the monthly fee goes up every year and how to find out by how much before you move in. I walk you through the "levels of care" price sheet nobody hands you on the tour, where help with your pills or your shower gets added to the bill one line at a time. I tell you what I found in the contract about who decides when you have to move to a different floor or a different building. And I tell you what I saw when I came back at dinnertime on a Sunday. I'm not a lawyer, so before you sign a residency agreement, it's worth having an elder law attorney read it. There is no money in telling you what the brochure leaves out. That's why nobody on the tour will. Tell me in the comments: have you toured one of these places, for yourself or for a parent, and what surprised you? And tell me if you're watching for yourself or for a parent. I read every single one. Independence isn't where you live. It's who gets to decide. #RetirementHome #AssistedLiving #SeniorLiving #AgingInPlace #RetirementCommunity #AgingParents #ElderCare #Retirement #IndependentLiving #LongTermCare #Over60 #Over70 #AdultChildren #SeniorAdvice #StayingIndependent
