Year 1: you put $1 in the bank. 1% interest a year. And your family gets one rule: don't touch it. 💰 (This one was requested by @LinoGamePlayer. Thank you!)
Year 70: it doubled. $1.99. It only took your whole life. Year 140: $3.99, which today is a fancy coffee ☕... except coffee won't be invented for 1,300 years, and the banker has never heard of it. Year 476: the Roman Empire falls. The bank doesn't. Somehow.
Year 628: $512, and your family lives in a hut. Your kid asks: can we spend it? No. Year 793: Vikings! 🛶 Luckily, the balance is carved in a giant stone. Year 1000: $20,751, which today is a used car 🚗... except cars won't exist for 886 years. Year 1100: a knight offers to guard your money for 2% a year. It only earns 1%. You do the math.
Year 1347: the plague reaches Europe, and everyone stays home. Year 1394: your family hits $1 million, and there's nothing to buy. Unless you really like turnips. Year 1450: in Italy, bankers work at a bench, a banca, which is where the word bank comes from. Go broke, and legend says they break your bench: banca rotta, which is where bankrupt comes from. 🪑 Year 1492: a sailor asks to borrow it for a boat trip. He's sure it's a shortcut. No.
Year 1600: your hallway has 64 portraits of people who never touched it, and they all look like you. Year 1700: your family's weddings have one extra vow: "And never touch the account?" 💍 Year 1776: America is born, and your account is already 1,775 years old. Year 1849: the gold rush. Your family already has $96 million, so they stay on the porch. Year 1879: the light bulb 💡, so now you can check the balance at night. Year 1903: the first airplane flies for 12 seconds, and your account earns $1.66 million that year without moving at all.
Year 1929: the stock market crashes. Your family walks into the bank, checks it, and leaves. Year 1955: can we spend it? Still no. Year 1969: humans walk on the Moon 🌕, and Grandpa says back in his day it was only $278 million. Year 1983: the family password is DONTTOUCHIT. Year 1999: Y2K, and at midnight the balance says $160 million for one second. Year 2007: you check it on your phone every 5 minutes. Year 2020: you earn $14,539.88 in one day without leaving the couch.
Year 2026: $563,354,684.33. You finally touch it. You take out $3.99... for a coffee. ☕ It earns the $3.99 back in 22 seconds. Then your kid asks: can we spend the rest?
What would you have bought with it, and in what year? 👇
🧮 The math
$1 at 1% interest, paid once a year starting in the year 1. Every year the balance gets multiplied by 1.01, so in year n it's worth 1.01^(n-1) dollars.
At 1% a year, money doubles about every 70 years (69.7, to be exact). That's the rule of 72: divide 72 by the interest rate to estimate how many years it takes to double. At 7%, it doubles about every 10 years.
In 2026 the account earns about $5.6 million a year. That's about $15,434 a day, or about 18 cents a second, so $3.99 comes back in about 22 seconds.
At this rate it passes $1 billion in 2084. At 2% instead of 1%, it would be worth about 260 quadrillion dollars today.

🎹 The soundtrack is an original track called "Don't Touch It." It's the same tune all the way through, carried through 2,000 years of music: a Roman lyre, a monk's chant, Viking war drums, a lute at the market, a harpsichord, a church organ, fife and drum, a banjo, ragtime, jazz, doo-wop and a psychedelic organ. In 1983 it finally turns into synthwave, and in 2026 it lands in D major.
This is a what-if: it ignores inflation, taxes, fees, wars and bank failures, and nobody in the year 1 had dollars. Everyone in this video is made up, including the Vikings. 💰
