What is something your body knows that your brain hasn’t caught onto yet?
In this First Friday Webinar, Shanon Olsen and Courtney Caldwell return to our theme of cultivating steadiness, this time through the body. Most of us were trained to work from the chin up. This conversation asks you to notice what happens below that line when something catches you off guard.
We all get thrown. A message lands wrong, plans change, the news hits hard, and our bodies react before we’ve had a chance to think. Shanon and Courtney talk through the automatic stress-based reactions many of us have carried since childhood, why they protect us in the moment, and what they cost us over time. You’ll hear why telling on yourself out loud can help a whole team settle, and you’ll practice a few somatic moves you can do at your desk or on a Zoom call in under 30 seconds.
In this session:
A check-in question you can come back to a few times a day
The idea of getting thrown, from Ellen Langer’s work on mindfulness
Stress-based reactions as protective armor
Why naming your own reaction helps more than calling out someone else’s
Butterfly taps, ear pulling, and knee squeezes, with a walkthrough of each
This month’s challenge: pause, notice, and choose one small action when you feel yourself getting thrown.
Books and thinkers mentioned:
The Quaking of America by Resmaa Menakem
The Enneagram for Black Liberation by Chichi Agorom
Mindfulness by Ellen Langer
