This lesson explains how three connected tools support observation and assessment in early years practice. It begins with observation templates, showing how structured recording can capture a child’s behaviour, interactions, environment and developmental progress consistently over time. The lesson then introduces digital platforms, which can store and share observations with educators, parents and other relevant people, while supporting written notes alongside photographs, video and audio. Finally, it explores developmental frameworks, including the EYFS and Development Matters, as reference points for interpreting evidence, recognising strengths and identifying suitable next steps. Using the example of Maya’s turn-taking during outdoor play, the lesson demonstrates how an observation can inform responsive planning. The three tools are brought together in a simple workflow: record the observation, review it against a developmental framework, and use the findings to plan an appropriate learning experience. This supports progress tracking, tailored provision and reflective early years practice. Read the related CMS Vocational Training guide: https://cmsvoc.co.uk/blog/early-years...
