In the first chapter of our 2026 Bluecoats Sound Design Breakdown, Matt Jordan takes us inside the acoustic sound palette of "Gravity & Grace." Rather than building the front half of the production around traditionally electronic sounds, Matt and the Bluecoats team created a sound world rooted in acoustic instruments, live sound design, and unconventional sound sources. The result is a palette that can feel electronic while remaining fundamentally acoustic in origin. ⸻ CHAPTERS 00:00 Intro 01:34 Audio Playback 01:58 "Don’t Look Down" & Prepared Piano 02:43 Reco Electros & Chain Chimes 04:19 Bike Pump Riser 04:47 Recording & Processing Reco Electro Sounds 06:51 Reco Electros in MainStage 07:06 Building the Acoustic Pre-Show 09:03 Processing the Reco Electros 10:44 Live Harmonica & Leslie Speakers 11:24 Building an Acoustic Sound World 12:06 String Glissandi & Ritual Being 12:16 Final Thoughts ⸻ In this breakdown, Matt explores: • The acoustic vs. electronic concept behind Gravity & Grace • How Chris Cerrone’s Don’t Look Down influenced the sound design • WTF Percussion Reco Electros and Chain Chimes • Recording and processing Reco Electro sounds for MainStage • Creating bowed and scraped piano-like sounds from acoustic instruments • Pitch-shifting and layering samples to create a more natural sound • Building the Bluecoats pre-show soundscape with live acoustic sound design • Processing Reco Electros, including EQ, compression, and stereo effects • Using live harmonica through Leslie speakers • Combining live and sampled sounds to expand an acoustic instrument’s capabilities • How the front ensemble contributes to the overall soundscape This is Part 1 of our three-part breakdown of the Bluecoats’ 2026 production, "Gravity & Grace."
