In this episode of @theRareMapGuy I take you inside Alexander Keith Johnston's Physical Atlas of Natural Phenomena, one of the great scientific and thematic atlases of the 19th century, and show you 10 of my favorite maps from this remarkable work. View the complete 1856 atlas, including photographs and additional information: Alexander Keith Johnston's Physical Atlas of Natural Phenomena https://nwcartographic.com/collection... Published in Edinburgh in 1856, the atlas contains 35 elaborate double-page plates devoted to geology, oceans, weather, plants, animals, ethnography, disease, human populations, and other attempts to understand and visualize the natural world. Some of these maps are beautiful, some are scientifically fascinating, and others provide a remarkable window into what people understood or thought they understood about the world nearly 170 years ago. I'm Sammy Berk, an antique map dealer and owner of New World Cartographic in Chicago.
