This walk explores the Xinjiekou neighborhood in Beijing's Xicheng District, following Xinjiekou South Street, Baihua Shenchu, Mianhua Hutong, and Hucang Hutong. On a clear afternoon, tall old trees shade the streets, while traffic, electric scooters, and small neighborhood shops create an everyday scene of local Beijing life. Turning into Baihua Shenchu, the busy main street quickly gives way to a narrow hutong. One of the area's best-known historic alleys, Baihua Shenchu has a name that translates roughly to "Deep Among the Flowers." According to local tradition, it originated from a garden created by a couple surnamed Zhang during the Wanli reign of the Ming dynasty. The garden was said to bloom throughout the seasons and attract gatherings of scholars and writers. The alley was later called Huaju Hutong during the Qing dynasty before reportedly regaining its original name during the Guangxu reign. Continuing into Mianhua Hutong, gray-brick courtyard walls, low traditional houses, rows of mature trees, and everyday neighborhood activity line the narrow streets. Several stories explain the name "Mianhua," meaning cotton. One links it to cotton-fluffing craftsmen who gathered nearby as the Huguosi temple fair grew in popularity. Another is a local legend about Qin Liangyu, a female military commander of the late Ming dynasty, who is said to have grown cotton and spun thread to make winter clothing while in Beijing to support the imperial court. By the time we reach Hucang Hutong, the neighborhood still feels closely connected to daily residential life. Bicycles, electric scooters, parked cars, and residents coming and going all form part of the streetscape. Walking from Xinjiekou South Street into these older hutongs reveals a clear change in scale, from a busy urban road to intimate residential lanes, where historic place names and present-day Beijing life coexist. —— 📅 Filmed: September 8, 2025 📍 Location: Xinjiekou, Xicheng District, Beijing, China 💬 Subtitles (CC): Available in Multiple Languages 🎵 Preview Music: “Eternally (Full Version)” — Rafael Krux Licensed via NeoSounds: https://www.neosounds.com/songs/16896 —— ▶️ More Walks: ★ Beijing Walks    • Beijing Walks | 北京散步   ★ Everyday Beijing    • Everyday Beijing | 北京范儿   ★ Hutong Walks|Beijing's Traditional Alleys    • Hutong Walks【品】北京胡同   ★ Historic Walks|Cultural Landmarks / Historic Sites / Old Streets    • Historic Walks【耍】人文景點/古蹟/老城/老街   ★ Members Exclusive Walks|Members-Only City Walks    • Members Exclusive Walks|城市漫步會員精選   —— ❤️ Enjoyed this city walk?
