The Trigger: Arjuna Vishada Yoga (The Despondency of Arjuna)
Just before the blowing of the war conchs, Arjuna asked his charioteer, Lord Krishna, to drive their chariot between the two opposing armies (Senayor Ubhayor Madhye). He wanted to inspect those who had gathered to fight.
When Arjuna looked at the opposing lines, the abstract concept of "enemy" vanished. Instead, he saw:
• Gurus & Elders: Bhishma (his beloved grandfather) and Drona (his revered archery master).
• Kinsmen: Uncles, cousins (Kauravas), nephews, and lifelong friends.
The Psychological & Physical Breakdown
Faced with the reality of slaying his own family, Arjuna suffered an acute existential crisis:
• Physical Manifestation: His limbs grew weak, his mouth went dry, his body trembled, hair stood on end, and his legendary bow, Gandiva, slipped from his hand.
• Moral Dilemma: Arjuna reasoned that a victory achieved by shedding the blood of loved ones was worthless. He argued that killing elders and kinsmen would destroy family traditions, lead to social chaos, and bring unmitigated sin (Papam).
• Despair: Overwhelmed by grief and attachment, Arjuna refused to fight, sat down in the chariot, and cast aside his weapons.
2. The Core Issues Behind Arjuna's Collapse
Arjuna’s depression was not cowardice—he was the world’s greatest warrior. It was rooted in deep internal conflicts:
Source of Conflict Description
Misplaced Attachment (Moha) Conflating personal relationships with righteous duty (Dharma).
Identity Crisis Confusion over whether his role as a warrior (Kshatriya) outweighed his duty as a family member.
Consequence-Oriented Thinking Over-calculating the gruesome outcome of war rather than focusing on moral necessity.
3. Lord Krishna’s Response & Counsel
Seeing Arjuna paralyzed by grief, Lord Krishna delivered the discourse that forms the Bhagavad Gita. Krishna shifted Arjuna's perspective through four major core teachings:
A. The Eternal Self vs. The Physical Body (Sankhya Yoga)
• Krishna reminded Arjuna that the physical body is mortal, but the soul (Atman) is eternal, birthless, and indestructible.
• Just as a person changes old clothes for new ones, the soul casts off worn-out bodies. Therefore, grieving for the inevitable death of the physical body is born of ignorance.
B. The Path of Unattached Action (Karma Yoga)
• Action without Entitlement: Krishna declared that Arjuna had a right to perform his duty, but never to claim its fruits (Karmanye Vadhikaraste Ma Phaleshu Kadachana).
• Duty over Emotion: As a warrior facing unrighteousness (Adharma), fighting a just war was his prescribed duty. Inaction out of emotional weakness was an act of dishonor.
C. Restoring Righteousness (Dharma)
• Krishna clarified that the war was not a personal feud, but a struggle between righteousness and tyranny. Tolerating Adharma out of misguided compassion would bring far greater harm to society.
D. Universal Vision (Vishwaroopa Darsana)
• To clear all remaining doubts, Krishna revealed his Cosmic Form (Vishwaroopa), demonstrating that time (Kala) had already brought about the destruction of the warriors. Arjuna was merely an instrument (Nimitta-matram) in the divine cosmic plan.
4. The Resolution
By the end of the dialogue (Chapter 18), Arjuna’s illusion (Moha) was dispelled, his doubts resolved, and his clarity restored. He picked up his bow and declared:
"Karishye Vachanam Tava" — "I will act according to Your word."
Modern Psychological Analysis
Arjuna’s reaction on the battlefield is a classic presentation of Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) triggered by imminent high-stakes conflict, combined with deep existential grief.
A. Somatic Manifestation of Anxiety & Panic
Arjuna’s physical symptoms map directly to a modern panic response or acute somatic reaction to stress:
B. Cognitive Dissonance & Identity Threat
Mental distress occurs when a person holds two contradictory beliefs or values:
• Belief A: "I am a peerless warrior (Kshatriya) whose duty is to protect righteousness."
• Belief B: "I am a devoted family member whose duty is to protect kin, masters, and elders."
This is a classic manifestation of depression where future reward loses value (anhedonia) because the path to achieving it violates one's core meaning framework.
