Have you ever arrived at a train station and realized you were standing at the wrong entrance? Or waited for a bus only to learn that its route had changed? In this B1–B2 conversation, learn practical English for moving around a city, checking directions, and making a new plan when something unexpected happens.
In Episode 41 of Easy English Learning Podcast, Emma agrees to show Grace, a visiting photographer, three places in one afternoon: Riverside Market, City Museum, and a café beside Central Library. Daniel listens as Emma describes a day full of familiar travel surprises. Their first challenge is finding each other at South Station. Then the map app freezes, they take the wrong metro exit, and they ask a local person for directions to the market.
Emma and Grace expect to catch the number twelve bus to the museum, but a parade changes its route. Instead of waiting without knowing when it will arrive, they compare their options and take the metro. Later, a closed sidewalk and a café entrance hidden around a corner give them more opportunities to ask clear, polite questions.
The story has a specific route and a real deadline: Grace needs to return to South Station by 3 p.m. The trip is not about becoming a perfect city guide. It is about staying calm enough to ask useful questions, listening carefully, and checking what a person means before taking the next turn.
WHAT YOU WILL PRACTICE:
• Asking someone how to get to a place politely.
• Understanding go straight, turn left, turn right, and walk past.
• Using across from, next to, toward, and around the corner.
• Asking which platform and which direction to take.
• Talking about getting on and getting off a bus or train.
• Checking whether a destination is within walking distance.
• Describing a delay, a detour, or a changed travel plan.
• Giving an arrival time without making unrealistic promises.
USEFUL PHRASES FROM THE EPISODE:
“Could you tell us how to get to Riverside Market?”
“So, straight to the fountain, then left?”
“Which platform goes toward Harbor Square?”
“Get off at Museum Street.”
“Is it within walking distance?”
“Where exactly is the entrance?”
SPEAKING TIP: When someone gives several directions at once, repeat the important steps as a short question. For example, “Straight to the fountain, left on Willow Street, then the entrance on the right?” This shows you are listening and gives the other person an easy way to correct you. You can also say, “Sorry, could you say the last part again?” if the street name is unfamiliar.
LISTENING TIP: Pay attention to small words such as “at,” “on,” “past,” and “opposite.” They can change where you need to turn or stop. For extra practice, draw a quick three-stop route and explain it to yourself in English: where you start, how you travel, and where you get off. Practice with your own neighborhood rather than memorizing the fictional streets in the story.
Listen once for the entire story, then replay the turns where Emma asks a question and repeats the answer to confirm it. Shadow these short phrases aloud. Finally, imagine a visitor asking for directions in your neighborhood and explain a route using two or three simple steps. You can pause to speak in your own voice before continuing.
This episode is for intermediate adult learners who want natural American English, everyday speaking patterns, and listening practice built around an understandable story. You do not need to memorize a complicated map. Focus on the expressions that help real people understand one another.
COMMENT CHALLENGE: Write THREE travel expressions you heard and ONE original sentence using one of them. Then answer: What's one place in your city that you would enjoy showing a visitor?
