Bramshott: 318 Canadian Soldiers Remembered

This Remembrance Day, I’m visiting Bramshott Churchyard in Hampshire, a very special and poignant place where 318 Canadian soldiers are laid to rest, far from the homes and families they left behind. During the First World War, Bramshott Common was home to a huge Canadian military training camp. But for many of the young men stationed here, their story ended in tragedy. Having travelled thousands of miles to serve their country, many lost their lives not on the battlefield, but during the devastating Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918. Among the beautiful Commonwealth War Graves are the headstones of these Canadian servicemen, alongside memorials remembering nursing staff and others who lost their lives while serving. I’ll also be looking at the memorial to the sailors buried here in connection with King George’s Sanatorium, which cared for seamen suffering from tuberculosis. And there’s more to discover at the beautiful historic St Mary’s Church, including the curious legend of the Devil’s Footprint and its connection to the famous horror film actor Boris Karloff, who once lived in the village. This is a place filled with history, tragedy and remembrance, and a reminder that those who died far from home should never be forgotten. 🌺 WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.
