Thirteen tiny children's graves in a remote Kent churchyard helped inspire one of the most famous opening scenes in English literature. But who were the children buried here, and why did so many die so young? In this historical documentary, I visit St James' Church in Cooling, on Kent's Hoo Peninsula, a place closely associated with Charles Dickens and his classic novel Great Expectations. Dickens frequently walked through the surrounding marshland from his home at Gad's Hill Place in Higham, and is known to have visited the churchyard, where thirteen unusual little gravestones caught his attention. These are believed to have inspired the graves of Pip's five brothers in the haunting opening chapter of Great Expectations, shortly before his terrifying encounter with the escaped convict Abel Magwitch. But behind Dickens' fictional story lies a very real and often overlooked history. The graves belong to children of the Comport and Baker families, several of whom died when they were just weeks or months old. Using historical records, gravestone inscriptions and family research, we investigate who these children were and explore the circumstances of their short lives. We also examine the realities of childhood in Georgian and Victorian Britain. Why was infant mortality so high? What diseases threatened young children? What medical treatments were available? And did parents in the eighteenth century experience grief differently from families today? Along the way, we explore the history of St James' Church, the bleak North Kent marshes that inspired Dickens, and the remarkable connection between a small Kent village and one of Britain's greatest novels. This is the true story behind the thirteen little graves of Cooling — and the forgotten children whose memorials became part of literary history.
