Grace in Goodbye For my best friend. After years of quiet on the farm, one dentist visit changed everything. The cancer was back. We fought it with appointments, surgery and radiation, and we won. Then an infection slipped in where nothing could reach it, and I spent the next eighteen months leaning in, making sure he kept his dignity and was never alone. I visited hospice on nearly every off day. We laughed, we joked, and when the door closed, he’d ask me to lay by his side and sometimes he cried. It was the first fight I lost, and I gave it all and more. He wore a joke to the fire, I laughed while I cried, and the Pacific got what he asked for. I kept a little, because he let me.
