For generations, the Hebrew Bible's Tabernacle stood at Shiloh. It was the sacred tent that, according to scripture, sheltered the Ark of the Covenant before Jerusalem ever had a temple. Then Shiloh burned. The Bible never describes the fire. Archaeologists found it anyway: charred storerooms, scorched raisins and collapsed brick, all buried in the hills north of Jerusalem.
This documentary follows a century of digging at Tel Shiloh. It begins with the Danish expedition of the 1920s, whose director died in the middle of a season. Then come Israel Finkelstein's excavations in the 1980s, and finally the current dig led by Scott Stripling of the Associates for Biblical Research, which has turned up altar horns, ceramic pomegranates and the wall of a large building.
We separate what scripture says from what the soil shows, and we give the competing theories about where the Tabernacle stood. Was it on the summit, on the northern platform, or nowhere we can still find? We also look at why scholars still disagree about what the evidence means.
