Sindile Mfazi died in July 2021. South Africa was told it was COVID. His widow never believed it — and five years later, the state dug him up and found poison.
Lieutenant General Sindile Christopher "Pitso" Mfazi was the Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection — one of the most senior police officers in the country. At the time of his death, he was investigating his own headquarters: the Secret Services Account, a procurement universe of around one point six billion rand in COVID-19 personal protective equipment, and the fallout from the Phala Phala burglary.
He kept a pocketbook and a diary. On the 10th of December 2020, at 18:33, he recorded an intelligence call from an unregistered number — a warning that there was a plot to assassinate him, and that senior police officers were involved. Seven months later, he was dead.
On the night he died, witnesses describe men from police headquarters in his home, removing documents while his body was still upstairs. His widow, on the phone at that moment, can be heard saying: "Leave the cell phone. You are not going to have it."
This is the full account — the diary, the exhumation, the testimony, the missing files, and the court case that has finally put a suspect in front of a magistrate.
