“You came back today.” The girl smiled as the great dragon quietly folded its wings. Every evening, just before sunset, a dragon would arrive at the western tower of the castle. Everyone in the kingdom feared it. The old books said it was descended from the terrible dragon that had burned the kingdom a hundred years ago. But the girl knew something they didn't. The dragon had never once breathed fire. On cold days, it sheltered her from the wind with its wings. On rainy days, it kept her dry beneath its enormous body. Every evening, she sat on the balcony with a book, and the dragon rested beside her, listening quietly. One day, in the old library, she discovered a forgotten book. It told a different story. A hundred years ago, a dragon had saved the people of the kingdom from a terrible fire. After rescuing the very last child, it had disappeared. On the final page was a small illustration. A dragon flying through the sunset, carrying a little girl on its back. She stared at the picture for a long time. Then she looked up. “Could it really have been you?” The dragon said nothing. It simply narrowed its golden eyes and gently touched its nose to her hand. Just then, the evening bells began to ring. The dragon slowly spread its wings. Then it lowered its back in front of her. “...Can I ride on your back?” Beyond the castle, the setting sun painted the clouds gold.
