In everyday life, we are always thinking about something, always moving, always chased by time, and the days go on without real rest. I am the same. At times like that, I find yasuragi, 安らぎ, simply by letting my mind drift and doing nothing at all. The Japanese word yasuragi means a quiet, untroubled peace. Of course, a trip or time in nature would be best. But even when that is not possible, I believe a little time at night to do nothing, think of nothing, and just rest slowly is truly precious. So I made this music hoping you can simply listen, without doing anything in particular, and give yourself a quiet time to settle your heart. You don't have to do anything. Tonight, just be here.
Yasuragi - the quiet peace of a night with nothing you must do. In Japan, yasuragi is the calm, untroubled feeling that comes when you stop chasing anything at all: no task to finish, no thought you have to hold on to, only the stillness of the moment you are in. On a late autumn night of first frost, in the garden of an old Zen temple, the sliding doors of the main hall stand open and a single paper lantern glows on the tatami. Gold-leaf sliding doors painted with soft ink clouds catch its warm light, and a monk sits alone before them, doing nothing at all. Outside in the dark, an old pine and a maple stand still, a stone lantern waits beside the raked gravel, and the light spills gently across the wooden veranda and its steps. Two hours of slow Japanese zen music for inner peace, stress relief and quiet rest: shakuhachi flute, koto, a rin singing bowl and a warm, quiet low drone, the hollow knock of a bamboo fountain, a few last autumn crickets and a rare, distant temple bell, long stretches of stillness, and at the very end, waking rested by morning.
Use this for meditation and mindfulness practice, for inner peace and stress relief, for an evening when you want to do nothing and think of nothing, for unwinding after a long day of thinking and racing the clock, for deep relaxation, for study, deep focus, or yoga, and for the nights when you simply want to sit still and rest. It also works as gentle sleep music if you leave it playing, and as quiet music for the end of a long day.
