Aluminum Was Once More Precious Than Gold
In 1852 aluminum sold at thirty-four dollars an ounce; the official price of
gold was twenty dollars sixty-nine. In 1855 a bar of it was exhibited beside
the French crown jewels. In 1884 the whole world made three point six tons,
and the largest piece ever cast went on display at Tiffany's before being
set on top of the Washington Monument. Then two men aged twenty-two and
twenty-three, one in a woodshed in Ohio and one in Normandy, found the same
trick two months apart, and the price fell by a factor of two hundred. With
the price series year by year, and where the most famous story about the
metal actually comes from.
