LSL 90001 Drags the Failed Class 89 ‘Badger’ into Carlisle - The Avocet Achievement - 18/08/2026

On 18th August 2026, the one and only Class 89 ‘Badger’ locomotive 89001 ‘Avocet’ was to run it’s first Public Mainline service after 25 years, hauling a special train from Crewe to Glasgow Central. Unfortunately things did not go well. The Class 89 only managed to operate under its own power for about 20 miles, before coming to a stand at Warrington Bank Quay after an issue with the locomotives battery charger was reported. The locomotive was declared a failure, and 90001 ‘Royal Scot’ was sent as 1Z99 from Crewe to take the tour forward. Due to the heavy delay picked up, the train lost the path to Glasgow and was curtailed at Carlisle. On arrival at Carlisle, the Class 90 ran around to connect to the DVT at the rear, and the set was shunted into the Holding Sidings where it would stay until it was time to head back down south. I rode the set from Carlisle to Preston on its return journey, and what a lovely ride it was despite not having the promised traction doing the work. I do feel bad for the number of spotters who were waiting north of the border to see the charter. Hopefully the locomotive will soon be repaired and one day be able to head to Scotland.
